Remember Nuremberg

Hi everyone,

I thought it might be worth saying a little about the photograph accompanying this poem, and about where the poem itself came from.

I first wrote down many of these ideas while facing legal proceedings that eventually resulted in findings of professional misconduct against me. Among the matters raised were the writing of what were described as “fraudulent” vaccination exemptions, the spreading of misinformation, and examining patients’ blood without ethics committee approval.

During that period I began reading more deeply about the Nuremberg trials, the Nuremberg Code, and the circumstances that gave rise to them. The poem grew out of that process.

I subsequently wrote five essays exploring these questions and have recently completed a book, Medicine After Nuremberg. I will discuss the book, and the arguments behind it, in more detail shortly.

The photograph behind the poem is of a crystal that formed in a sample of paediatric hepatitis B vaccine that I examined after colleagues in the Philippines alerted me to concerns they were investigating.

For me, the image and the poem belong together. Both return to the same underlying questions: What are the ethical boundaries of medicine? What happens when curiosity is discouraged? And what obligations remain when established systems fail to ask questions for themselves?
